At the end of the Lord’s Prayer, there is the line, “And lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. ”
temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. ”
God knew that we would struggle with temptation.
Even Jesus was tempted, but he never sinned, unlike us.
We all have or will be tempted.
However, the apostle Paul writes,
“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to
mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what
you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out
so that you can endure it.”
mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what
you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out
so that you can endure it.”
Jesus includes this in his model prayer because he wants us to realize that if we ask, and if we truly want to be delivered from temptation and sin, God will show us the way out. Our problem is that we either don’t want a way out, or we would rather try to
fix the problem ourselves. That NEVER ends well! Let’s stop asking,
“How close can I get to sin before I get burned,”
fix the problem ourselves. That NEVER ends well! Let’s stop asking,
“How close can I get to sin before I get burned,”
and start asking,
“How close can I get to Jesus?”
