One of the most moving books that I’ve read is a book entitled
Miracle on the River Kwai by Ernest Gordon.
It tells the story of a group of Scottish soldiers who are imprisoned by the Japanese army. Each day the prisoners are given tasks that need to be done and every few hours a tool check is done
to make sure tools aren’t being stolen that could aid in their escape.
One day, when the tool check was complete, the group of
captive soldiers come up short one shovel. After a short period of
silence, one of the prisoners stepped forward and confessed to taking the
shovel. His punishment: he was beat to death in front of everybody.

A few hours later another tool check revealed, to the horror of the
captives, all the shovels were accounted for!
captives, all the shovels were accounted for!
They had miscounted the previous check!
When the war was over and the Japanese soldiers
became the prisoners, the Scottish soldiers made this pronouncement:
“No more hate, we need forgiveness and love.”

They treated their prisoners with dignity and respect.
What they said 80 years ago is still true,
we all need forgiveness and we all need love.

A Very Special Thank You to all of our VBS Volunteers!
Volunteers don’t necessarily have the time—they simply have the heart. Behind every welcoming smile, every organized classroom, and every helping hand, there are dedicated individuals pouring out their time to serve the community.
In ministry, it is easy to focus on the busywork or wonder if the small details truly make a difference. But the Apostle Paul reminds us that our selfless acts, no matter how big or small, are never in vain. Every cup of coffee poured, every lesson taught, and every door held is a direct reflection of God’s love in action.
Take a moment this week to thank a volunteer for their tireless dedication.
